ernest balmer studio, TORONTO, CANADA

Two Toronto-based opera artists have come together to form a new opera/theatre company focused on providing artists from equity-seeking groups a platform to tell their stories on their own terms. Amplified Opera (AO), co-founded by stage director Aria Umezawa and opera singer and theatre creator Teiya Kasahara, will launch with a concert series entitled, AMPLIFY. The series will take place October 10, 11, & 12 at the Ernest Balmer Studio in Toronto’s Historic Distillery District.

Each evening will feature a lecture-recital followed by a talk-back panel with additional guest panelists to give audience members a chance to further explore the themes discussed in each concert. Talk-back panels will be curated and hosted by Margaret Cormier. Audience Activation points to create an interactive experience will be designed by Matthew Vaile

About AO

What is Amplified Opera?

It may be considered a dirty word in opera, but we believe great art shouldn’t be afraid to

Raise your voice and be Amplified!

AMPLIFIED OPERA will give equity-seeking artists a space to showcase their talents in order to enhance public discourse, and better reflect marginalized perspectives.

To empower artists to tell their stories on their own terms, and inspire audiences to embrace challenging and diverse cultural experiences.

A world that fearlessly celebrates diversity.

We believe in Storytelling

Everyone has a story that can be valuable to the broader community. We create human connection by highlighting shared experiences. We understand the value of investing in the artistic process, and take the time we need to make sure our contributions to public discourse are complex, considered, and polished.

We welcome conversation

We lead our initiatives with integrity, and transparency. We are committed to embracing diverse views, and leaning into discomfort. We acknowledge that there are many truths, and will foster dialogue that incorporates many ways of knowing.

We champion diversity

We are committed to showcasing talented people from all backgrounds, ethnicities, creeds, bodies, abilities, and experiences. We provide a platform for people to raise their voices.
