NEW: Join our Facebook group for IBPOC opera artists in Canada and Canadians abroad!

How do we create a safer and brave space?

Do you want to anonymously say something at one of these conversations?

Earlier this summer, Amplified Opera, in partnership with Tapestry Opera, hosted three Holding Space town halls for IBPOC (Indigenous, Black, Person of Colour)-identifying opera artists in Canada opera artists. Based on your feedback, we’re making these events a monthly occurrence from November 2020 to May 2021.

HOLDING SPACE is BACK for the 2020-2021 season! We invite all IBPOC-identifying opera artists in Canada (and Canadians abroad) to join us for an open discussion and time to connect.

  • The discussions will take place on Zoom and will be a place for artists to share their experiences in an open forum and gather information to help us shape further action.

  • The discussions will NOT be recorded.

  • In the interest of creating a space that is safe for discussion, arts administrators and company representatives are asked to not be present

  • Additionally, participants may choose to submit their thoughts or questions anonymously at any time via this form.

Goals

  • The goals of these gatherings are to hold space for dialogue, networking, relationship-building, and create support for IBPOC artists in the Canadian opera industry.

  • Attend as many of the discussions as you like. We made them at different times of day and of the week to maximize accessibility.

Who is invited?

  • IBPOC-identifying opera artists & students in Canada (ex. singers, directors, conductors, stage managers, designers, composers, librettists, repetiteurs, etc).

  • IBPOC-identifying opera artists in Canada who also identify as the leadership of an indie-level opera company/collective.

Who should step back?

  • Non-IBPOC individuals and allies. We are grateful for the support of White allies and are looking forward to inviting everyone into the conversation at a future date. However, we feel it is important to start by creating space for artists of colour to speak openly about their experiences.
