ABOUT

Land Acknowledgment

October 2020

Amplified Opera wants to actively acknowledge the original caretakers of the land; caretakers who are still here and are still trying to protect and nurture the land we all live on.

It is long past time for us to listen to them and embrace our responsibility to bring the environment back to a place of respect and balance.

We want to strengthen our relationship with the land and understand its power in providing for us, for our ancestors, and for our future generations.

We invite you to watch this video or read our land acknowledgement below.

Thank you,
Amplified Opera

A wake-up call

Amplified Opera acknowledges that the land on which we are situated is governed by the pre-colonial treaty the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt covenant. The actions we take today are informed by the actions of those who came before us, and will affect many generations to come. By choosing to live here we are all treaty people.

A call for reflection

Gdoo-naaganinaa* is a living treaty. It is our responsibility to reflect on the ways we impact the world around us. The Dish nourishes us and we all share one spoon. As treaty people we are responsible for the well-being of the land and the creatures with whom we share it. We hold this responsibility to each other online and off.

A call to action

It is our responsibility to educate ourselves and govern our actions in a way that honours our covenant with each other and the land. Amplified Opera is committed to giving back to the Dish by living thoughtfully and with purpose so it can flourish for seven generations to come. Renewing this commitment acknowledges the caregivers of the land who have been doing this work since time immemorial.

The land on which we live and from which we benefit is the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. This land is covered by Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis.
