“Why opera,” is the question I have been asked since I began passionately pursuing this career as a twelve year old who grew up attending, later performing in and finally marketing for the Santa Fe Opera. Seeing trouser roles on that stage was the first representation of an authentic self I did not yet have the language to articulate. In fully realizing this self vision, the moral steps to achieve wholeness take me further from the art I first fell in love with. As I, not only peeked, but explored the entirety of what is behind the curtain, the disenchantment with the harm mounting this art has thus far created, firmly determined I do not fit in the traditional boxes of administration or leadership.
The show must NOT go on if those on both sides of the stage are terrified for their personal, bodily, mental, emotional and financial safety. It is an unpopular opinion, but one that I must firmly stand upon should I continue working in this art. My personal mission has been to create belonging and safety in opera for intersectionality diverse voices, giving voice to those not historically represented at the leadership table.
I draw from transmasculine, Native, Hispanic, and Canadian immigrant lived experiences. I aim to show up authentically in these identities in every space I occupy. I try only to speak from experiences I lived, but open myself to learning from those whose experiences do not align with my own. Other humans I collaborated with in championing this work describe me as a “cultural translator,” “glossary of care,” and “truth teller.” It is my intention to continue upholding these ideals and showing up in ways that best support my values and communities.
